A Texas teenager who was accused of fatally st*bbing another student during a high school track meet has been found guilty of murder.
Karmelo Anthony was convicted on June 9 following a closely watched case tied to the d*ath of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf. The incident happened during a track and field event in Frisco, Texas, in April 2025.
During the trial, Anthony maintained that he acted in self-defense. However, prosecutors argued that the evidence supported a murder conviction.
According to investigators, the confrontation began after a disagreement under a team tent at the event. Witness statements indicated that tensions quickly escalated before the situation turned violent.
Authorities said Metcalf suffered a fatal chest injury during the altercation. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but the teenager later lost his life.
Court records show that Anthony told officers he had been protecting himself when he was taken into custody. Jurors were asked to consider both murder and manslaughter charges before ultimately returning a guilty verdict.
The case drew significant public attention throughout the trial. It also sparked discussion over jury selection after reports noted that no Black jurors were chosen for the panel. Anthony is Black, while Metcalf was White.
The verdict brings one of Texas’ most widely discussed youth criminal cases to a conclusion, though reactions from both families and the wider community are expected to continue in the days ahead.
